Sclerotherapy is a safe, time proven method done to reduce the appearance of spider varicose veins. It eliminates the need for an invasive surgical procedure.
Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are those tiny purple and red blood vessels found most commonly on the thighs or lower legs. They are hereditary and can form anywhere on the leg, from the top of the thigh to the ankle. Occasionally, spider veins appear on the face.
Benefits of a New Look
Although treatment does not prevent the development of new spider veins, the removal of existing veins can dramatically improve the appearance of the affected area, providing a smoother, more youthful look. Veins lighten after each treatment, with two or more sessions usually required to reach desired best results.
Understanding Risks
Occasionally “telangiectatic matting,” a new network of veins, appear around the treated area. If this occurs, these veins can also be treated with sclerotherapy. Discoloration and blotchiness are more common but usually fades over time. Avoiding direct sunlight can minimize this side effect. More rarely, sclerotherapy can lead to blood clots or inflammation in the veins. Allergic reactions to sclerosing agents have also been reported. In order to minimize these risks, it is important that you follow all of the dermatologist’s instructions, before and after surgery. If you have recently been pregnant, ask your dermatologist about delaying the procedure, since spider veins caused primarily by pregnancy often resolve on their own.
Results of Sclerotherapy
Most patients report a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure and relief at no longer having to hide unsightly veins. The treated areas are noticeably clearer and in most cases, the skin continues to improve with each successive treatment.
